Apple's first foldable iPhone has encountered a severe pre-order backlog after early online shipping allocations for the iPhone Duo were rapidly exhausted on Friday, October 16, 2026. Within approximately 30 minutes of orders opening, every colour and storage configuration on Apple's US online store was showing estimated shipping dates in January 2027.
The shortage has also drawn attention from resellers offering pre-orders at substantial premiums. One eBay listing for a 2TB iPhone Duo was marked sold for $5,000, compared with Apple's official US price of $3,199 for the same configuration.
However, the January estimates do not mean Apple has stopped manufacturing the phone until 2027. The company continues to accept orders, and its official retail launch remains scheduled for October 23.
iPhone Duo Pre-Orders Push Shipping Into 2027
Apple opened iPhone Duo pre-orders at 5 a.m. Pacific Time, or 8 a.m. Eastern Time, on October 16. Early buyers could secure delivery around the scheduled October 23 launch, but later customers quickly encountered much longer waiting times.
According to 9to5Mac's October 16 report, by 8:30 a.m. Eastern Time all colour and storage combinations on Apple's US online store were showing an estimated shipping date of January 25, 2027. Some customers were seeing January 29.
The Verge also reported that online waiting times had reached late January less than an hour after pre-orders opened.
The reports establish that early US online shipping allocations were quickly taken. They do not establish that every iPhone Duo worldwide has been sold or that physical stores and mobile carriers have no stock reserved for the retail launch.
Both Colours and All Four Storage Options Affected
Apple offers the iPhone Duo in two colours, Star White and Night Sky. Customers can choose between 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB of storage, creating eight colour-and-storage combinations.
All eight combinations showed January 2027 shipping estimates during the reported October 16 US online-store checks. At that point, selecting a different colour or more expensive model did not provide an earlier estimated shipping date.
Apple's official US prices are:
| Storage | Official US Price | Reported US Shipping Estimate |
|---|---|---|
| 256GB | $1,999 | January 25, 2027 |
| 512GB | $2,199 | January 25, 2027 |
| 1TB | $2,599 | January 25, 2027 |
| 2TB | $3,199 | January 25, 2027 |
Prices exclude applicable US taxes. The dates reflect reported October 16 shipping estimates, not guaranteed delivery dates or permanent stock conditions. Both colours were affected at the time.
The colours, capacities and starting price are confirmed in Apple's official product announcement. The complete US price breakdown was also published by 9to5Mac when pre-orders opened.
Apple Acknowledges Extraordinary Demand
Apple responded to the extended shipping estimates by acknowledging unusually strong interest in its first foldable iPhone.
In a statement reported by 9to5Mac, the company described pre-order demand as extraordinary and said it was working to get the new devices to customers as quickly as possible. Apple also said it would continue accepting online orders.
The company has not publicly disclosed the number of iPhone Duo units available when pre-orders opened or the total number purchased during the initial rush.
That distinction matters. A rapid sellout of early shipping allocations does not reveal total sales or establish how much of the backlog reflects strong demand, constrained initial supply or both.
Has Apple Stopped iPhone Duo Production Until 2027?
Apple has not announced that iPhone Duo manufacturing is suspended until 2027.
The January 25 and January 29 dates were reported as estimated shipping dates for new online orders, not confirmed dates for restarting production.
Before the pre-order launch, technology publications cited supply-chain reports suggesting that Apple faced difficulties increasing production of its new foldable design. Those reports pointed to limited early supply, but they did not establish a complete manufacturing shutdown.
Apple has not provided a detailed public production schedule or a definitive date for clearing the backlog. Shipping estimates may change as more inventory becomes available, manufacturing output changes or existing orders are cancelled.
Customers should therefore treat January 2027 as an estimated shipping window reported on October 16, not proof that no additional phones will be manufactured or delivered before then.
iPhone Duo Resale Listings Reach $5,000
The long waiting period has attracted speculative resale activity, with some sellers offering early pre-orders at prices far above Apple's published retail rates.
MacRumors reported on October 16 that an eBay listing for a Night Sky iPhone Duo with 2TB of storage had been marked sold for $5,000. Apple's official US price for that model is $3,199, making the apparent premium $1,801.
A separate listing for a confirmed pre-order of the Night Sky 1TB model was marked sold for $4,400. Its regular US price is $2,599, also representing an apparent premium of $1,801.
In its initial stock checks, 9to5Mac observed resale asking prices reaching $5,200.
These figures describe individual listings rather than a typical resale price. A listing marked sold does not independently confirm that the device was delivered or establish every detail of the transaction.
Some sellers were offering pre-orders rather than phones already in their possession. Buyers should distinguish these arrangements from offers involving verified physical stock.
Inflated resale prices alone are also insufficient to establish that an illegal black market exists. The evidence supports describing the activity as speculative resale during a period of limited early availability.
Will iPhone Duo Still Launch on October 23?
Apple's official retail launch remains scheduled for Friday, October 23, 2026. The company has not announced a cancellation.
Customers who secured early pre-order allocations are expected to begin receiving their phones around launch day. Apple retail stores, mobile carriers and authorised sellers may also have separate stock allocations, depending on their location.
However, possible retail stock does not guarantee that customers will be able to purchase a device without a reservation on October 23.
According to Apple's September announcement, the phone is scheduled to become available in more than 70 countries and regions from October 23, with another 28 countries and regions following on October 30.
Customers looking for earlier availability should check the latest information from Apple or an authorised retailer rather than assume that the October 16 US online shipping estimates apply to every store.
What Makes Apple's First Foldable iPhone Different?
Apple unveiled the iPhone Duo on September 9 as its first foldable smartphone. When closed, the device has a 5.4-inch outer display. Opening it reveals a 7.6-inch inner screen designed for reading, entertainment and multitasking.
The company says the phone features its A20 Pro chip, a grade 5 titanium enclosure and a specially engineered hinge. Apple lists iOS 27.1 as the software version available with the device.
The new form factor represents a departure from conventional iPhone designs. However, the early shipping backlog alone does not establish the phone's eventual sales performance or the size of its long-term customer base.
When Will iPhone Duo Be Available in Pakistan?
Apple has not confirmed a Pakistan-specific retail launch date or official local selling price in the announcements examined for this report.
Its September announcement named countries including the United States, India, the United Arab Emirates and the United Kingdom among the initial launch markets. Pakistan was not specifically named, although the published list was not exhaustive.
Independent sellers in Pakistan may offer imported iPhone Duo units, but no confirmed nationwide inventory figures, arrival dates or typical local resale premiums were established during this review.
The US starting price of $1,999 is not necessarily the final amount a Pakistani buyer would pay. Import expenses, currency exchange rates, applicable taxes and retailer margins can affect local pricing.
No official device-specific PTA registration-tax amount for each iPhone Duo configuration has been independently verified for this report. Unofficial estimates should not be treated as confirmed government charges.

What Should Buyers Check Before Paying a Reseller?
Anyone considering an independent seller should first confirm whether the seller has a physical phone available or is offering a pre-order that has not yet been fulfilled.
Written delivery commitments, refund arrangements, payment protection and warranty coverage are particularly important when a seller is requesting a large advance payment or a substantial premium.
Pakistani buyers should also check the device's network-registration status and avoid assuming that an overseas purchase price includes every cost required for use in Pakistan.
What Happens Next?
Attention now turns to the October 23 retail launch, when store and carrier availability may provide a clearer picture of near-term supply. Apple's estimated online shipping dates may also change if additional inventory becomes available.
For now, the evidence supports three conclusions: early US online pre-order allocations were quickly exhausted, later orders faced reported January 2027 shipping estimates across all configurations, and some resellers advertised large premiums.
Apple has not announced that iPhone Duo production will stop until 2027. Any future change to manufacturing, shipping or Pakistan-specific availability will require separate verification.
