Radio Pakistan reported on 24 October 2026 that Pakistan Railways had announced emergency measures that would remain in force until 31 December 2026. The report attributed the declaration to Railways Minister Muhammad Hanif Abbasi.
What the measures require railway officials to do
Daily reporting is a key part of the reported instructions. According to Radio Pakistan, the Chief Engineers of the Civil and Mechanical departments must submit daily reports to the ministry. The Express Tribune also reported that the Head of Safety must submit daily reports.
The Express Tribune reported that field officers' leave had been cancelled and that officers were directed to visit the field on Sundays to supervise railway operations.
Railway officers travelling to other cities for official assignments were also directed to use trains, according to Radio Pakistan.
What has been reported about railway accidents
In a report published on 18 October 2026, The Express Tribune, citing railway sources, reported more than 55 passenger and freight train accidents since 1 January 2026. The figure remains attributed to railway sources. It is not an independently audited total and does not by itself prove a measured increase compared with earlier years.
The derailment near Multan
Dawn reported that the Peshawar-bound Rehman Baba Express derailed near Sher Shah Railway Station in the Multan district on 13 October 2026.
In a report published on 14 October, Dawn reported that five passengers were killed and 49 were injured.
Dawn reported that the initial investigation pointed to a technical problem involving a passenger coach. The report also said Railways Minister Muhammad Hanif Abbasi had directed the Federal Government Inspector of Railways to investigate. This was an initial finding, not a final conclusion.
What the report says about passengers
The measures described by Radio Pakistan focus on internal supervision and safety reporting. The report does not mention a general passenger fare change or a nationwide suspension of train services. This report alone does not establish that every route is operating without disruption.
